SANDSTONE RANCH

LARKSPUR, CO

2020

Acquired in 2017 by Douglas County, Sandstone Ranch is a historic recreational open space offering 12 miles of shared-use trails. Before Douglas County acquired the property, the entire acreage was slated to become a high-end housing development.

Singletrack Trails was initially brought in to design 9 to 12 miles of trails, and teach volunteers the basics of trail construction for the eventual implementation of a trail network.

After completion of the workshop, Douglas County was impressed with our design work and approached us with the opportunity to construct the entire trail system.

What was initially a three-year project quickly morphed into a 10-month project from planning to end of construction. Completed in the fall of 2020, Sandstone Ranch now boasts 12 miles of interconnected trails open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians, in a beautiful environment surrounded by historic ranching buildings and incredible wildlife habitat.

As an active working ranch during planning and construction, there were additional design considerations that played an important role in the project's success.

We took special care when designing and constructing the trail network at Sandstone Ranch, to ensure there was minimal impact to wildlife habitat, ranch animals and ranching operations.
