Starting 2012

2012 is running strong and it is time for Singletrack Trails to move out of the hibernation of office work and into the world of trail building.

During the month of February, we assisted Applied Trails Research in Georgia on a 200+ mile trail assessment on the entire Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.  This was a very intense project that included a total of five other trail construction companies.  We will have post up to recap the project soon.

After the Georgia project, we attended the Professional Trailbuilders Association member’s meeting in Albuquerque, NM.  It was great to see member’s from across the country in one location.  Singletrack Trails and Applied Trails Research to present a learning session on the benefits of GIS and GPS in trailbuilding and planning.

Next on tap is some overall website modifications and marketing campaign.  This winter saw the death of the email newsletter that never seemed to get out on time or have a diverse amount of information.  However, Singletrack Trails recommends you use a feed reader such as Google Reader and follow this link.

In addition to project updates, this blow will start to offer more tutorials on how to use trail tools, tool reviews, and GPS technology.

Freehub Magazine

The guys over at Freehub Magazine have been so impressed by the work the crew has been doing lately, they asked me to write an article about what we do at Singletrack Trails.

Check  it out here.

Geotagged photos update

New for 2010 updates will be geotagged photos updates.  This will allow you to see a track of the trail under construction and where on that trail the photos were taken.  This feature utilizes Google Maps and Flicker.  Viewers will  be able to see multiple photos at a specific location by clicking on the photo on the dialog box that appears.  Then a link to the Flickr set can be followed to see the other Singletrack Trails photos and sets.

Geotagged images will also aid the NEPA and layout services that Singletrack Trails offers.  Photos will accurate appear on maps provide by Singletrack Trails as a deliverable product to show locations of potential cultural impacts or areas that will be difficult to construct.

Here is an example of what is to come in future.  This map is from a recent research trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.  These photos are hosted on my personal Flickr stream, but you can see the existing Singletrack Trails photostream here.

A new season dawns

The winter hibernation is nearing its end. The final touches are being put on the first couple projects of the 2010 trail construction season for Singletrack Trails.

Exciting developments in project creation are currently in process. Singletrack Trails is currently working with several land agencies to put the finishing touches on contracts for the 2010 building season. If you have a project in mind, then now is the time to contact us to discuss your idea. We are happy to complete your project in partnership with local volunteers or regional youth corps. Using the staff of Singletrack Trails to oversee the completion of your trail construction project will take a good quality volunteer built trail to a high-quality, sustainable, shared-use trail.

Also, we are back in the blogging mode here at Singletrack Trails. Project updates will not be happening for a couple weeks as we mobilize as the snow melts. However, we have plenty of updates for what to look for this coming season and some archived video footage from the 2009 season to share.

The winds of change

The last week or so of business life has been focused on shifting the crew from one project to another.  Adam and Ryan finished up what we could in Grand Junction.  I went to and from Nevada.  Mandy has been preping the base camp for Curt Gowdy.  Nate has been working his other job until he starts with me soon.  The phone has been ringing.  The piles on the desk are getting bigger.  It is definitely summer time.

Here are some more photos from the Nevada project.  Yup, that is me flagging in snow up to my hip.  I am trying to work on some photos for how Singletrack Trails MK’s.

The crew starts at Curt Gowdy next week.  I am off to Rapid City to see a past project.  Jason Wells from IMBA is showing up to Fort Collins to work with me at the Spring Canyon bike park.  Look for some great updates in the next couple of weeks.
